Clauses

Types of Clauses
Independent Clauses

Some clauses make sense on their own. These types of clauses are called main clauses. They are also known as ‘independent’ clauses because they can stand on their own eg.Emma walked to school.

Subordinate Clauses

Some clauses do not make sense on their own. These types of clauses are called subordinate clauses eg. Carrying heavy books.

These clauses cannot stand on their own because they are not complete thoughts. But they are still clauses because they each contain a subject and a main verb. They can be added at the beginning or end of an independent clause eg.

Carrying heavy books, Emma walked to school.

Emma walked to school, carrying heavy books.
Embedded Clause
You could even add a clause in to the MIDDLE eg.
Emma, who was carrying heavy books, walked to school.
