Deeper Meaning in Poetry

Looking further and deeper in to a poem or piece of literature will score you will score extra points. Try and look for hidden meanings, deeper meanings, allegories, etc.

An allegory is like a metaphor where something represents something else for example the red poppies in a field may be symbolic of all the red blood.

Examples of deeper meaning in Literature:

ANIMAL FARM

The book is about talking animals which at first seems like a children’s book but is in fact an allegory to the events leading up to and during the Stalin era before World War II.

LORD OF THE FLIES

This book is about young children deserted on an island with no adults but is an allegory to human nature.

TYGER, TYGER

This poem by William Blake shows how the tiger is symbolic of evil.

These are just a few examples of how to look at the deeper meaning in a piece of literature-

What are the author’s intentions?

How does he/she convey the message?

Why have they chosen to include a metaphor, allegory, etc?

How do they want the audience to feel?

How do they use language, form and structure to convey this message?

By answering the above bullet points you will score higher marks as you are looking deeper in to the meaning of the piece and showing the examiner a wide range of your skills.
