Homographs


Homographs 




Words that are spelled the same yet have different meaning are known as Homographs. This is usually due to them having different origins.







An example of this is-



To WIND the clock. (from word windan)

The WIND blew hard in the storm. (from word wendas)

 

 

You can see that the origins of the word wind are similar which is why they are now spelled the same but pronounced differently.





Similar homographs are-





We had a ROW over the last piece of cake.

We had to ROW the boat.







I had to POLISH the cupboard.

He was a POLISH man.
