Plurals

There is a full moon tonight   (There is only ONE moon)



There are lots of stars tonight  (There are LOTS of stars)





this/these and has/have

 

This apple has gone bad  (There is only ONE apple)



These apples have gone bad  (There are LOTS of apples)




Nouns ending in y


To form the plural of nouns ending in y, drop the y and add "
ies."

Family becomes families
Story becomes stories
Baby becomes
babies



Irregular plural forms


There are several other irregularities in the plural forms of English nouns. Here are examples:

Man becomes men
Woman becomes women
Fungus becomes fungi
Thief becomes thieves
Person becomes
people



Compound nouns

Emma and Justin’s holiday plans  (a joint thing has an apostrophe on the second person’s name)

Emma’s and Justin’s wages were too low!  (two separate things have apostrophe’s after both names)
