Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing is where a lot of marks are often lost if you do not use the right technique. There are a few techniques to help you achieve your best in this part of English.

Below is a list of the main important techniques to use in descriptive writing-

Use a formal tone

Use adjectives (describing words) to add more information

Use good verbs (eg. exclaimed instead of said)

Use similes and metaphors (eg. Her eyes sparkled like diamonds)

Set the scene with the first paragraph

Use good connectives (eg. However, therefore, notwithstanding)

Use a range of sentences- short sentences create impact, long sentences provide pace

Use your senses; taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing

SHOW NOT TELL- eg. Do not write ‘He was angry’; write about how his face went red, his eyebrows slanted, his teeth clenched, etc
