Similes and Metaphors

SIMILES/ METAPHORS

Similes and metaphors add detail and make the writing more interesting and visual.

A SIMILE is LIKE something   eg. Your eyes are like diamonds.

A METAPHOR IS something   eg. Her hair was the golden sun.

Similes

What sounds better? Look at the real passage below from Dracula and then look how it sounds without the simile.

Actual passage with the simile

“The other was fair, as fair as can be, with great masses of golden hair and eyes like pale sapphires.”

The passage without the simile

“The other was fair, as fair as can be, with great masses of blonde hair and blue eyes.”

Metaphors

It is raining cats and dogs means the same as ‘It is raining heavily’ but see how it sound better.

Other examples are:

A heart of stone

I was jumping for joy
